Readville 5-Yard Assessment and Remediation
Project Description
The MBTA Readville 5-Yard is an approximately 42-acre site. It has served as a railroad yard since 1834. The western portion of the yard, which covers approximately 21 acres, is located in the town of Dedham. The eastern portion of the yard, which also covers approximately 21 acres, is located in the city of Boston. Several railroad companies (i.e., New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, Penn Central Railroad, Conrail, and Amtrak) have used and owned the yard. The MBTA acquired the yard from Amtrak. The MBTA currently uses the yard as storage for railroad-related materials.
Pursuant to a Settlement Agreement and Consent Judgment with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the MBTA will perform the necessary assessment and remediation work at the site in accordance with Chapter 21E of the Massachusetts General Laws and the Massachusetts Contingency Plan.
