“Free books, free books, free coffee, get your free books!”
That unlikely cry rang out from a band of librarians behind a table set up at the end of the platform of the MBTA’s West Hingham commuter rail station one morning this month as people streamed by on their way to catch the train to Boston.
Some barely glanced up from their phones, but others ventured over and left, smiling, with a temporary library card, directions for downloading books, and a free copy of “The Race Underground,” the story of the race between New York and Boston to build the first subway in the country.
