Shawsheen River Bridge - Lowell Line
Contract No. B92PS08 includes design/engineering services for the Shawsheen River Bridge that carries Lowell Commuter Rail Line service over the Shawsheen River in Wilmington and Billerica, MA. HNTB Corporation was selected as the engineering firm responsible for design.
The Shawsheen River Bridge was constructed in 1850 as a stone masonry arch, in 1940 modifications were made to place a steel arch liner within the stone arch. The stone work on the arch is in need of repairs due to loose and misplaced stones along with repointing of the masonry joints required. The existing steel arch liner is rusting in areas and does not meet load rating standards. The MBTA plans to place a new steel arch liner with new abutments within the existing, add drainage pipe to compensate for smaller hydraulic opening, and rehabilitate the stone masonry arch.
The project is moving towards the 100% design level with anticipated submission Spring of 2015. Currently working with Army Corp. of Engineers to finalize environmental permitting for project..
