Commuter Rail Celebrates Earth Month by “Going Green with Purple”

Posted on April 26, 2024

Contest asks passengers why they choose to go green by riding the train.

The MBTA and Keolis Commuter Services (Keolis), which operates the Commuter Rail system on behalf of the MBTA, launched the “Go Green with Purple Sweepstakes” to highlight how small actions like choosing to ride the train can have a dramatic impact on reducing pollution. The contest is meant to help educate the public about the environmental benefits of taking the Commuter Rail versus driving alone. More information about the campaign can be found at mbta.com/GoGreen or by following #GoGreenWithPurple on social media.

"Public transit continues to be one of the most efficient ways to positively impact air quality, reduce our carbon footprint, and promote a safe and healthy environment for generations to come," said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng. "Thank you to our partners at Keolis for continuing to promote the many positive aspects of trading in your car for public transit – whether you’re traveling for work, school, or recreation, get out of your car, sit back, and leave the driving to us."

“With traffic continuing to burden Boston drivers, taking the Commuter Rail is a reliable and green alternative,” said Abdellah Chajai, CEO of Keolis Commuter Services. “Switching to the Commuter Rail for just two round trips a week can save nearly 3,000 lbs in CO2 emissions versus driving alone. More than 90% of Commuter Rail trains arrive on-time, so it’s easy to beat the traffic and reduce your carbon footprint by riding the train.”
