Using the Farebox

Customers who travel using the bus, Green Line, or BRT Silver Line may need to use the farebox to pay their fare. This page provides a brief orientation and instructions on how to use the farebox.

The Card Target
When looking at the top of the farebox, the card target is located in the lower right corner. Use the card target to add money to your CharlieCard or pay your fare using your CharlieCard.

The CharlieTicket Slot
Just above the card target, you will find the CharlieTicket slot. Use the CharlieTicket slot to pay your fare using a CharlieTicket. If you pay more than the initial fare needed to board the bus using cash on board, change will be returned as stored value on a CharlieTicket via the ticket slot.

The Display Screen
When looking at the top of the farebox, the display screen is located in the upper left hand corner. The display screen is where information about your CharlieCard or CharlieTicket (such as the card or ticket balance) is displayed.

The "Add Value"/"Accept" Button
When looking at the top of the farebox, the "Add Value"/"Accept" button is located in the upper right hand corner. Use this button to add value to your CharlieCard and to accept the amount of money you are adding to your CharlieCard.

The Bill Insert
When looking at the top portion of the farebox, the slot where 1, 5, 10, or 20 dollar bills are inserted can be found nearest the lower left side of the farebox. To speed up the boarding process, please make sure that the bill you are inserting is free of wrinkles or bends when inserting it into the farebox. The farebox may have difficulty reading bills that are wrinkled or bent.

The Coin Slot
Slightly below the bill insert, you will find the coin slot. The farebox accepts nickels, dimes,quarters, and silver dollars.

 

 

Paying Your Fare Using the Farebox

Paying Your Fare Using Your CharlieCard
To pay your fare using your CharlieCard, simply tap the CharlieCard to the card target. The farebox will beep once to inform you that the appropriate amount has been deducted from your CharlieCard. Three quick beeps from the farebox lets you know that either the machine was unable to read your card properly or that you do not have enough money on your card to pay the fare.

Paying Your Fare Using Your CharlieTicket
To pay your fare using your CharlieTicket, simply insert your CharlietTicket into the farebox using the CharlieTicket slot. When inserting your CharlieTicket into the farebox, make sure that the arrow is facing down and away from you. The farebox will beep twice to inform you that the appropriate fare has been deducted from your CharlieTicket. Three quick beeps from the farebox lets you know that either there was a problem reading your CharlieTicket or that you do not have enough money on your CharlieTicket to pay your fare.

Paying Your Fare Using Bills or Coins
To pay your fare using coins or bills, simply insert the appropriate fare into the farebox using the bill insert or the coin slot. The machine will beep once to inform you that you have paid the right amount. Three quick beeps from the farebox lets you know that either a bill has been rejected or that a coin has been rejected. If you pay more than the initial fare needed to board the bus using cash on board, change will be returned as stored value on a CharlieTicket via the ticket slot. 

Adding Money To Your CharlieCard Using the Farebox

To add money to your CharlieCard using the farebox:

  1. Press the "Add Value/Accept" button to beging adding value to your CharlieCard.
  2. Tap your CharlieCard to the black card target. The farebox will beep once to let you know that your CharlieCard was recognized.
  3. Insert the amount of money you would like to add to your CharlieCard using the bill or coin slots. The CharlieCard's value will be displayed on the display screen located in the upper left hand corner of the farebox.
  4. Press the "Add Value/Accept" button again to 'accept' the transaction.
  5. Tap your CharlieCard to the card target, a second time, to complete the transaction and register the value you just added. The farebox will beep once to let you know that your CharlieCard was recognized. To pay your fare after adding value to your CharlieCard, tap your CharlieCard to the card target once more.
