Civil Disturbance Unit

CDU Image

The Civil Disturbance Unit (CDU) was established in 2005 to assist the Patrol Force in effectively addressing any riot and/or civil protest related situations that would create a hazard to patrons, employees or to the transit system in general.

Officers assigned to this Unit have been selected on the following criteria: written recommendation from their TPSA/Unit Commander, sick time usage, discipline history, oral interview and physical fitness test. Officers assigned to the Civil Disorder Unit receive extensive training to include the International Association of Chiefs of Police's (IACP) Basic Crowd Control Response training, transit specific close quarters response training (modeled after the Washington (DC) Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Police Department's riot control plan) and the Unit conducts regular training to maintain a high level of proficiency. As MBTA Transit Police Officers, CDU Officers fulfill other full time assignments within the Department.
