Deputy Chief Robert E. Lenehan Jr. - Patrol Division

Deputy Chief Lenehan is the Commander of the Patrol Operations Division. He joined the MBTA Transit Police Department in 1985 after serving as a police officer for the Town of Rockland in Massachusetts. Deputy Chief Lenehan has risen through the ranks of the MBTA Transit Police Department and has held numerous positions and commands throughout his career. Deputy Chief Lenehan has experience working with diverse groups in order to create a cohesive, community based policing strategy. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to the communities comprising the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority district, as well as to the officers and supervisors under his command. In addition to developing policing strategies to address crime, disorder, and traffic safety, he oversees a number of initiatives to secure the nation′s fifth largest transit system from the threat of terrorism.

As Division Commander, he oversees the four Transit Police Service Areas, the Headquarters staff, the Detail Unit, and the Special Operations Section, which is comprised of the SWAT Team, The Explosives Detection Unit, the Patrol K-9 Unit, the Motorcycle Unit, and the Crisis Negotiation Unit. He has served a large part of his career in the Patrol Operations Division having held all ranks within the Division. In addition, he has also served as commander of the Internal Affairs Unit and the Major Case Unit of the Investigative Services Division. In 2003, then Lieutenant Detective Lenehan was assigned to create a revenue security plan for the MBTA, the nation’s fifth largest public transportation system, that would ensure the safe and secure transport, counting and banking of all cash revenues received by the MBTA. That plan was used as a template by other governmental bodies within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Deputy Chief Lenehan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice degree from Anna Maria College. He is also a graduate of the Police Executive Research Forum′s Senior Management Institute for Police and other Police command training programs.
