Alternative Travel Options During Red Line Closures
Transit Ambassadors and other MBTA personnel will be available to assist riders. We recommend planning for extra travel time.
September 6 – September 29
There will be no Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Braintree.
Commuter Rail will be free between Braintree and South Station:
- Use the Middleborough/Lakeville and Kingston lines for service from Braintree
- Use the Middleborough/Lakeville, Kingston, and Greenbush lines for service from Quincy Center
- There will be no Commuter Rail service the weekends of September 7 – 8 and 14 – 15
- There will be a Commuter Rail shuttle that runs directly between South Station and Braintree. At Quincy Center, use the Red Line shuttle to Braintree to connect with a Commuter Rail shuttle to South Station.
Free shuttles will be available between Ashmont and Braintree. All shuttle buses and stops are accessible. You can take Red Line service between JFK/UMass and Ashmont to connect to the Ashmont shuttle stop.
Please note, some of the free shuttles may include a fleet of MBTA buses. Contactless payment readers on these shuttles will still be active. Do not tap as payment is not required.

About This Work
During this closure, we'll address 20 speed restrictions as part of the Track Improvement Plan. We'll perform additional work at each of the impacted stations, including lighting repairs, painting, and deep cleaning.
