Free/Reduced Fares Terms and Conditions

Privacy Notice

Your participation in one of the MBTA’s free/reduced fare programs is administered in accordance with the MBTA’s Privacy Policy.

People 65 and older, persons with disabilities, and persons who are blind participating in a free/reduced fare program will be asked to provide personal information in connection with the purchase and registration of Electronic Fare Media, and our determination of eligibility for the respective program. In addition, we will electronically store photographs in order to personalize Electronic Fare Media issued under the free/reduced fare program. We will use this information to provide the free/reduced fare program and ensure compliance with eligibility requirements for the respective program.

In accordance with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and its rules (collectively, “COPPA”), users under the age of 13 may not use or provide any information via the MBTA's free/reduced fare online applications, including name, address, telephone number, email address, or any screen name or user name (collectively “Personal Information”), without verified parental consent. If we learn that we have collected Personal Information from a child under the age of 13, without verifiable consent from a parent or guardian, we will promptly delete that Personal Information. Please contact us if you believe we have collected Personal Information from a child under the age of 13 without consent.

We are taking extra precautions to protect your personal data. The online form that you are using to submit your application is set up so that your data is sent directly to a secure server environment that uses a firewall, and other advanced technology, to prevent interference or access from outside intruders.

Rules and Conditions of Use

Any applicant falsifying documents or otherwise fraudulently misrepresenting eligibility status may be subject to criminal/civil penalties under the law and may be disqualified or suspended from participating in any free/reduced fare program. Additionally, an unauthorized person using a free/reduced fare CharlieCard may also be subject to criminal/civil penalties under the law and you may be disqualified or suspended from participating in any free/reduced fare program for allowing unauthorized use of your card.

Affirmation 

I affirm under penalty of perjury that all statements made on this application, which the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority relies on to determine my eligibility status, is true and complete. I have read and understood all the information contained in this application. I understand that all statements made in this application may be subject to investigation and verification and that a material misstatement or fraud will disqualify me for free/reduced fare privileges.

I understand that my free/reduced fare CharlieCard is only for my use and may not be given or sold to anyone else. If the MBTA should find that I have not followed the Free/Reduced Fare Rules and Conditions of Use, I understand that my free/reduced fare CharlieCard will be deactivated and I will not be eligible to reapply for the free/reduced fare program.

By signing this application, I acknowledge that I have:

  1. Read the Free/Reduced Fare Rules and Conditions of Use, and 
  2. Accept and agree to be bound by such rules and conditions of use.
