MBTA And Local Officials Celebrate Completion Of
Ruggles Station Viaduct
MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas and local officials today officially re-opened the busway viaduct of Ruggles Station on the Orange Line, marking the completion of a year-long project to improve transit connections at the station. The Ruggles Station busway viaduct serves as the drop off point for both the Orange Line Transit and Commuter Rail passengers.
“This is an important investment in the MBTA’s core transportation infrastructure,” said General Manager Grabauskas. We are identifying and undertaking projects that address the critical needs of our existing transit system.”
The $3.2 million rehabilitation project included the replacement of the existing deck, and portions of the sidewalk, safety walk, and granite curbs. In addition, cracks were repaired and all deteriorated portions at the underside of the reinforced concrete beams were removed and patched. Access to the sidewalks of the viaduct from Ruggles Street was updated per ADA requirements.
The newly rehabilitated viaduct allows for improved bus services to the station with better connections to the Orange Line and Commuter Rail services. Additionally, the renovated viaduct has created better access to the station for both pedestrians and customers with mobility impairments.
