Franklin Line Weekend Shuttles during 2 Weekends for East Street Bridge Rehabilitation Work

Posted on October 16, 2018

East Street will also be closed with traffic detours in place

Today the MBTA announced weekend shuttle bus service replacement along the Franklin Line as well as traffic impacts in support of the East Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project. Weekend work will begin Friday on October 19 and November 9 with regular service resuming on Monday morning of October 22 and November 12, respectively.

Originally constructed in 1911, the East Street Bridge in Westwood, MA, carries the Franklin Commuter Rail Line with construction efforts focused on extending the bridge’s useful life. Construction on the existing bridge has been ongoing since March 2018 and has thus far included the installation of deep foundations (precast concrete drilled shafts) behind the existing abutments, utility relocation, and track reconstruction. New precast concrete abutment caps, precast concrete approach slabs, and two steel superstructures will be installed on two separate weekends utilizing accelerated bridge construction techniques.

During the October weekend construction work, abutment caps and approach slabs will be lifted into place and attached to previously installed drilled shafts. Franklin Line train service will be replaced with shuttle bus service in both directions between Norwood Central and Dedham Corporate Stations beginning at 9 PM on Friday, October 19, and in both directions from Forge Park to Dedham Corporate Stations on Saturday, October 20, and Sunday, October 21. East Street will be closed during the construction with a traffic detour in place. Regular train service is expected to resume at the start of service on Monday, October 22, with regular vehicle access to East Street scheduled on Monday morning as well.

During the November weekend construction work, the bridge superstructure will be moved from the MassDOT Yard at Grafton Avenue and travel along Strafford Road to East Street where it will be lifted into place and attached to the new bridge abutments. East Street will be closed beginning at 9 AM on Friday, November 9, with a traffic detour in place. Franklin Line train service will be replaced with shuttle bus service in both directions between Norwood Central and Dedham Corporate Stations beginning at 9 PM on Friday, November 9, and in both directions from Forge Park to Dedham Corporate Stations on Saturday, November 10, and Sunday, November 11. Regular train service is expected to resume at the start of service on Monday, November 12, with regular vehicle access to East Street scheduled on Monday morning as well.
