Direct Service for Braintree Branch of the Red Line, Schedule Update For Monday’s Commute

The MBTA today announced that riders using the Braintree/Quincy branch of the Red Line no longer have to transfer to another train at JFK/UMass Station. This is a result of around-the-clock repairs to signals and track infrastructure that sustained damage last week when a Red Line train derailed as it was approaching JFK/UMass Station.

After a series of successful tests yesterday, service has resumed on all tracks through the station but trains continue to operate at restricted speeds.

“We are pleased to be able to resume direct service to the Braintree branch, but we still have a lot of work to do,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “Recovery operations are continuing with a goal of full service, but riders should allow additional time for their commutes because track switches must be operated manually until repairs are completed. For Monday’s commute, we will continue to offer additional commuter rail trips and will continue to keep riders routinely updated on the schedule.”

For Monday morning, the MBTA continues to ask Red Line customers to plan on additional travel times of 20 minutes. Because of the ongoing signal work, countdown clocks on Red Line platforms will remain deactivated to avoid displaying inaccurate train arrival predictions.

Another option for commuters coming from the South Shore are Commuter Rail trains that make stops at 3 Red Line stations. Customers need only show a CharlieCard or CharlieTicket to the Commuter Rail conductors. In addition to regularly scheduled trains on the Kingston, Middleboro and Greenbush Lines, extra trains will make stops as follows:

T Board Meeting

General Manager Poftak and Deputy General Manager Jeff Gonneville will provide another update at tomorrow's Fiscal and Management Control Board meeting, which begins at 11 AM.

Recovery and Repair Update

Yesterday, more than 150 MBTA workers and contractors continued to make progress repairing damaged signals, switches, and bungalows in the area impacted by the derailment. This includes the following repairs and updates:

  • All damaged third rail (approximately 200 feet) was repaired or replaced, as well as 200 feet of rail near track switches.
  • Progress has been made to repair wires and cables in the JFK/UMass area
  • Additional power and signal work is continuing.

MBTA and Red Line Investments

The $8 billion that the MBTA plans to spend over the next 5 years is the most in any 5-year period ever—and this funding will have tangible results and provide a more reliable ride for our customers.

The MBTA is investing nearly $2 billion in the Red and Orange Line improvement program, which will completely replace the cars and signal systems, and upgrade track and maintenance facilities, of both lines.

The MBTA is investing $350 million on the signal systems and $470 million for track and maintenance facility upgrades.

The MBTA is working to deliver 252 new Red Line cars and expects the first Red Line pilot car to be delivered this summer.

This is aggressive capital spending to completely update these major lines, and customers are going to see tangible results of these investments in the next couple of years.

The MBTA has also made a number of investments along the Red Line since 2015 including replacing third rail and track, and signal work.
