MBTA Continues 28-Day E Branch Accelerated Construction

Track replacement and other improvements are on schedule for completion by August 29.

Today the MBTA announced that the 28-day full-access closure of the E Branch for 4,000 feet of track renewal is on schedule for completion by Sunday, August 29, 2021, including an additional 600 feet of track replacement and crosswalk improvements between 78 South Huntington Avenue and Heath Street Station. 

To date, crews have completed upgrades to 3,600 feet of full-depth embedded track. The replacement of the intersection at Huntington Avenue, Tremont Street, and Francis Street is underway.

Alternate Green Line Service during Accelerated Work

From August 11 to August 23, 2021, E Branch service continues to be suspended between Brigham Circle and Heath Street Stations all day, every day. During this time, the Route 39 bus will be free for those boarding between Heath Street and Brigham Circle. 

From August 24 through August 26, 2021, E Branch service will be suspended between Brigham Circle and Northeastern Stations all day, every day. This shift is due to required power section precautions as work is completed at Brigham Circle. During this time, the Route 39 bus will be free for those boarding between Brigham Circle and Northeastern. 

From August 27 through August 29, 2021, E Branch service will return to being suspended between Brigham Circle and Heath Street Stations all day, every day. The Route 39 bus will continue to be free for those boarding between Heath Street and Brigham Circle.

Accelerated Approach

By utilizing an accelerated approach of 24/7 work for 28 days straight, the MBTA is delivering a year’s worth of night and weekend work in less than one month. This approach minimizes disruption for riders and the communities served by the Green Line E Branch while delivering improved safety, reliability, and a smoother experience for riders, drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Minimizing Noise

As with all construction, some of this work will be noisy. The MBTA requires contractors to implement noise mitigation strategies to minimize noise disruptions to neighbors. Noise levels are monitored, and the MBTA responds to all noise complaints. A 24/7 noise hotline is available to report a noise issue at 617-222-4100.
