Newly Renovated Brookline Hills Station Is Open

The Green Line station is fully accessible.

The MBTA is pleased to announce that the Green Line’s Brookline Hills Station, closed since April 2021, has reopened. While the station was closed to accommodate Brookline High School’s Expansion Project, the MBTA made some renovations and much-needed accessibility improvements to the D branch station. Completed work includes raised platforms for accessible boarding, accessible pedestrian track crossings and access pathways, new canopies, seating, lighting, wayfinding, and a pickup and drop-off location for The RIDE.

“Transit-oriented development projects such as these create a sense of collaboration and camaraderie with local communities,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak. “We thank our partners at the Town of Brookline for collaborating with us on this work. The improvements made at Brookline Hills Station create a safer and more accessible journey that riders can depend on.”

The new accessible Brookline Hills Station is now open.

In September 2019, work began in the vicinity of Brookline Hills Station. Funded by the Town of Brookline, the work at Brookline Hills was done in conjunction with the construction of a new school campus building that will span over the Green Line D Branch. Construction at the station was also able to be accelerated due to track outages used to complete the D Branch Track and Signal Replacement project. The station closed in April 2021 with trains bypassing the station in both directions to finalize station upgrades. While Brookline Hills is open and providing accessible service as of last weekend, adjacent site work and building finishes will continue to progress for the remainder of the project.

“It’s great to start off the new year with another fully accessible station added to the system,” said MBTA Chief of Capital Transformation Angel Peña. “The completion of this project brings the D Branch one step closer to being the first fully accessible branch on the Green Line.”

Completed work at Brookline Hills Station includes upgrades to safety systems, new canopies and benches, and more.

As part of Capital Transformation, this project aligns with the Green Line Transformation (GLT) team’s D Branch Station Accessibility Improvements project. Future improvements will be made at Waban, Eliot, Chestnut Hill, and Beaconsfield Stations, creating a safer, accessible, and more reliable experience for all Green Line riders. Along with improvements made at Brookline Hills and Newton Highlands, this project will allow the D Branch to become fully accessible to riders of all abilities.

The GLT portfolio of projects is aligned by four Levels of Transformation: Safety and State of Good Repair, Accessibility, Legacy Car Replacement, and Increased Capacity. This project supports the MBTA’s goal of making every Green Line station and vehicle accessible for all riders.
