Back Bay Station Improvements

Rendering of Back Bay Station lobby

Status: Construction

We are making major air quality improvements at Back Bay Station, which serves 18,000 Orange Line and Commuter Rail riders each day.

The project is being done ahead of Boston Properties’ $32 million concourse renovation.

Work includes:

  • Pressurizing 2 stairwells between the track and concourse levels to prevent exhaust fumes from rising to the concourse
  • Installing jet fans in the tunnel to draw fresh air to the platform
  • Upgrading station infrastructure

Building a Better T

As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
