Back Bay Station Improvements

We are making major air quality improvements at Back Bay Station, which serves 18,000 Orange Line and Commuter Rail riders each day.Â
The project is being done ahead of Boston Properties’ $32 million concourse renovation.
Work includes:
- Pressurizing 2 stairwells between the track and concourse levels to prevent exhaust fumes from rising to the concourse
- Installing jet fans in the tunnel to draw fresh air to the platform
- Upgrading station infrastructure
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
We have already installed new doors and an extensive system of ductwork from ventilation equipment on the roof of the station, into the stairways, and across the Commuter Rail tracks.
We will aerodynamically separate the track and concourse levels through the use of the air system and the new doors, which are on 2 stairwells leading to the platforms: One for tracks 1 and 3, and the other for track 2.
This will essentially create a seal to help block train exhaust fumes from rising to the concourse area. Completion is expected in late summer 2019.
