Bus Stop Amenities Program

As part of the Better Bus Project, we’re preparing to improve approximately 100 MBTA bus stops to enhance rider experience, increase accessibility, and make our bus network easier to use. Improvements could include installing shelters, updating infrastructure to meet accessibility standards, and adding other amenities at bus stops.
Project timeline: 2025 – 2028
Status: Bus stop evaluation and selection
Budget: $15 million
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Project Overview
The MBTA received $15 million in Fair Share funding to support the Bus Stop Amenities Program. In response to direct feedback from riders, we’re making improvements to approximately 100 bus stops across our bus network.
Rider Benefits
- Enhanced accessibility
- Improved safety at bus stops and street crossings
- Better protection from weather events
- A more comfortable waiting experience
Bus Stop Amenities
We plan to install improvements at selected bus stops between fall 2026 and spring 2028. Bus stop upgrades may include:
- Bus shelters
- Seating
- Solar-powered lighting
- Curb ramps
- Sidewalks
- Crosswalks
Bus Stop Evaluation and Selection
We're determining where to install bus stop improvements based on a stop’s ridership, accessibility needs, site conditions, and available space. We also aim to distribute amenities across the bus network.
We'll use the MBTA Bus Stop Design Guide and work with municipalities to tailor improvements at each location.
