Lynn Commuter Rail Station Improvements

The Lynn Commuter Rail station on the Newburyport/Rockport Line is a key transportation hub for the City of Lynn and the MBTA bus system. We are planning significant improvements to the station’s structure, safety, functionality, and accessibility that will also reduce station maintenance costs.
Lynn Commuter Rail Station closed in the fall of 2022 to address potential station deterioration issues. Alternate travel options during the station closure includes a free shuttle bus from Lynn to Swampscott station until an interim platform is built.
Construction of the interim Lynn station began in September 2023 and is expected to be completed in December 2023. The interim station will consist of two side platforms: the inbound platform will be accessed from the City of Lynn’s Ellis Street parking lot, and the outbound platform will be accessed through a walkway beside the Senior Center on Friend Street. The pedestrian connection between the two platforms will use the existing sidewalks under the Silsbee Street Bridge. The interim station will be fully accessible with ramp access to each platform.

What to Expect During This Work
Work resumed in August and is expected to continue for approximately 4 months. Crews will be working from 9 PM to 5 AM Sunday through Thursday nights. The work zone extends from the Lynn Station Parking Garage to Central Square.
Due to the equipment required to perform this work, lights and moderate noise levels can be expected. Nighttime lane closures at Central Square will be required. These will be coordinated through the Lynn Police and Public Works Departments.
