Reduced Fares

T fares and passes are reduced for seniors, persons with disabilities, passengers who are blind/visually impaired and junior-high and high school students. Children 11 and under ride for free when accompanied by a paying adult.

Seniors

Seniors (65+) can ride local buses for $0.40 cents inner express buses for $1.40, and outer express buses for $2.00. Seniors can also ride MBTA subway service for $0.60 cents and commuter rail or boat services for 50% off the regular full fare and for a discounted fare to Logan. In addition, seniors can purchase a monthly pass (good for unlimited travel on local bus and subway) for $20. No discounts apply to express bus passes, commuter rail passes, or boat passes.

Discounted rides and passes require a Senior CharlieCard available at the Reduced Fare CharlieCard Office located at Back Bay Station. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m. (closed on holidays). Call 617-222-5976, 617-222-5854 (TTY), or 1-800-543-8287 for more information.

Please note: As of Tuesday, January 24th, the Sr/TAP Office at Downtown Crossing will be closed for repairs. Please visit the Back Bay Station Sr/TAP Office for all of your SR/TAP needs. Thank you.

Customers with Senior IDs issued prior to May/June 2005, must obtain a new Senior CharlieCard, available at the location noted above.

Persons with Disabilities

Discounted rides and passes require a Transportation Access Pass (TAP) CharlieCard. Medicare Card holders are automatically eligible for a TAP CharlieCard. The TAP CharlieCard is available at the Reduced Fare CharlieCard Office located at Back Bay Station. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. - 5:00p.m. (closed on holidays). Passengers who are blind/visually impaired

Customers who are blind/visually impaired ride all MBTA services for free with a Blind Access CharlieCard from the Reduced Fare CharlieCard Office. To receive a Blind Access CharlieCard, you must have an ID from the Massachusetts Commission for the blind or proof of blindness.

A reduced fare may be available for customers who are not eligible to receive the Blind Access CharlieCard.  See the "Persons with Disabilities" section above for more information.  If accompanied by a guide, free travel does extend to the guide.

Students

Students ride the T for 50% off the price of standard T fares and are eligible for a $20/month Student T-Pass good for unlimited travel on Bus, Subway, Express Bus, and Commuter Rail Zones 1A, 1 and 2 until 11:00 p.m. on school days.

Discounted rides or passes require a Student CharlieCard or CharlieTicket, available at participating junior high and high schools. See your school administrator for details.

Children 11 and under
