Update On Status Of The Rehabilitation Of Savin Hill Station On The Red Line

Posted on January 28, 2005

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and its contractor Barletta Construction have been working aggressively for several months on the rehabilitation and modernization of Savin Hill Station. With the station closed to Red Line service, work crews have completed the construction of a new 400-foot platform, and are nearly complete with the placement of the structural steel. Additional work includes the enclosing of the headhouse and the installation of the glass curtain wall. While significant progress is visible, the MBTA and its contractor Barletta encountered delays in the procurement and erection of the structural steel. The delay in erecting the steel has ultimately affected the re-opening of the station slated for February/March 2005. This unexpected setback combined with inclement weather has delayed the re-opening of Savin Hill Station to May 2005. Both the MBTA’s Red Line Operations personnel and Barletta are working cooperatively to maximize the crews and working hours in an effort to minimize this delay. As construction continues at Savin Hill Station, the MBTA will continue to provide supplemental transportation service between Savin Hill and JFK/U-Mass Stations. To better service customers displaced during the rehabilitation project, the MBTA has added an additional van during peak periods. Presently, customers have the following transportation options: * 3 MBTA buses accessible at Brooks Pharmacy on Dorchester Avenue: 2 buses depart every 7 minutes during peak periods and a 3rd bus is available every 7 minutes between 5:45 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to accommodate the morning and evening rush hour. Note: departure times may vary due to road congestion. * 2 Vans accessible at Savin Hill Station: 1 Van is available between 5:20 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. (7 days a week) operating every 12 minutes; and a 2nd van operates every 12 minutes between 6:10 a.m. and 10:20 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. to accommodate the morning and evening rush hour. Note: departure times may vary due to road congestion. The MBTA will continue to work cooperatively with the community and local officials by providing project updates throughout the life of the project. Persons with questions or comments are recommended to call the MBTA project office at (617) 222-6757.
