Mattapan Station To Get Upgrade
Posted on May 5, 2006
The MBTA Board of Directors today voted to award a $6.2 million contract to renovate Mattapan Station. The project includes the construction of new platforms complete with shelters and benches, new signage, lighting, and communication system. The project will also feature a new two-story building to house an MBTA Police substation, and offices for bus operations personnel.
MBTA General Manager Daniel A. Grabauskas reiterated his pledge to invest in the transportation infrastructure. “We are committed to rebuilding and maintaining our transit system in a state of good repair. The community will soon get what it deserves - a modern, accessible, safe, and user-friendly station.”
The renovation of Mattapan station will begin at the end of June and take approximately 15 months. To expedite the project and minimize service disruptions along the Mattapan High Speed Line, work at Mattapan and Ashmont stations will be performed simultaneously. This coordination will allow for a significant amount of work to be completed during the year – long shutdown of trolley service slated for June 24th.
In addition to the renovation of Mattapan station, the six stops between Ashmont and Mattapan will get a complete facelift. Upgrades to the stations include new canopies, painting, signage, and improved handicap access.
The Mattapan rehabilitation project was rewarded to S & R Company, Inc.
