Shuttle Buses to Replace Fairmount Line Train Service During 3 December Weekends
Posted on November 27, 2017
BOSTON — Due to work taking place as part of the construction of Blue Hill Avenue Station, all weekend Fairmount Line train service will be replaced with shuttle buses during the weekends of December 2 and 3, December 9 and 10, and December 16 and 17. Shuttle buses will make stops at all stations between South Station and Readville in both directions.
During these weekends in December, train service will be replaced with shuttle buses between all stations from South Station to Readville to accommodate the construction of Blue Hill Avenue Station. Work taking place for the new station requires some unencumbered weekend access to the Fairmount Line in order to accommodate the construction schedule. The MBTA and Keolis will also take advantage of these weekend suspensions by continuing federally mandated rail safety Positive Train Control installations along the Fairmount Line during that time.
Before and after these weekends in December, weekend train service between Morton Street and Readville Stations as well as the last two outbound weekday trains between South Station and Readville Station will continue to be replaced with shuttle buses to also accommodate the construction of Blue Hill Avenue Station. These shuttle bus schedules can be found at mbta.com.
Construction of Blue Hill Avenue Station began in June 2017 and will be the ninth station on the Fairmount Line. The new station is part of $130 million in Fairmount Line investments, including the opening of Talbot Avenue Station in 2012, the opening of Newmarket and Four Corners/Geneva Avenue Stations in 2013, bridge replacements, and significant rail and tie replacement work. Blue Hill Avenue Station will be located approximately 6.5 miles from South Station and a quarter mile from Mattapan Square, featuring a center-island platform and two covered, fully accessible pedestrian ramps. The Station’s construction contract was awarded to McCourt Construction in January 2017 in the amount of $16.97 million. Blue Hill Avenue Station is expected to open to Fairmount Line customers in 2019 after a two-year construction period.
