Lane Shifts Will Be Necessary on Route 18 as South Coast Rail Construction Advances

Construction includes some vehicle travel impacts on Route 18 near New Bedford Station beginning early June 2023 through the end of 2023.

Motorists are advised of upcoming lane shifts on Route 18 beginning next month while New Bedford Station construction progresses.

Area drivers should be aware of the heightened construction activity in the Sea Streak parking lot area, which may impact members of the public taking the ferry or visiting waterfront amenities in New Bedford this summer and fall. While the parking lot will remain in service and accessible, Route 18 vehicular traffic will experience lane shifts near New Bedford Station during the construction. Two travel lanes in each direction will be provided daily. There will also be limited lane or street closures along Route 18 and Acushnet Avenue during overnight periods with vehicles detoured via signage around the area.

In collaboration with the City of New Bedford and MassDOT Highway’s District 5, the MBTA’s SCR team is in the process of finalizing detour plans and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
