East Cottage St and Norfolk Ave Bridge Replacement

Timeline: Winter 2021 – Fall 2023
The East Cottage Street and Norfolk Avenue bridges, between the Uphams Corner and Newmarket stations, carry the Fairmount Line through Roxbury and Dorchester. We’re replacing the bridges, both built in 1906, with updated steel infrastructures to improve safety and reliability.
Building a Better T
As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
Project Features and Benefits
- Replace existing bridges to extend service life by 75 years
- Strengthen the support structures to increase load capacity
- Remove speed restrictions to reduce service delays
- Repaint community mural on East Cottage Street
Service Alerts
To minimize service impacts, we will accelerate construction and limit rail service disruptions and road closures to weekends.
Buses will replace train service the weekend of September 22 – 25.
What to Expect During This Work

Weekend Closure Scheduled for Norfolk Ave, September 22 – 25
We will close Norfolk Ave under the bridge the weekend of September 22 – 25, from 1 AM Friday to 4:30 AM Monday. The closures are necessary to allow our contractor to install the new bridge.
For more weekend closure information:
Traffic Impacts
Norfolk Ave traffic will be detoured to major streets:
- Eastbound traffic will be detoured to Magazine St. and Massachusetts Ave.
- Westbound traffic will be detoured to Columbia Rd, Dudley St, and Magazine St.
- Local traffic using Burrell St will be directed to use Norfolk Ave westbound detour routes.
Local traffic access on either side of the Commuter Rail bridge will be maintained. Detour signs will indicate the routes. Detour maps are available in the above flyers.
Pedestrians
Pedestrians will not be able to walk under the bridge that is under construction, and we will post detour signs.

Residents will not be able to park under the bridges throughout construction.
September 11 – September 29, parking will not be allowed on Norfolk Ave from the bridge to East Cottage St or on East Cottage St from Robey St to Norfolk Ave.
