Timeline: Winter 2021 – Spring 2023

East Cottage Street and Norfolk Avenue bridges, which were both built in 1906, carry the Fairmount Line through Roxbury and Dorchester. We’re replacing the steel infrastructure of both bridges to improve safety and reliability.

Building a Better T

As part of our $8 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.

We will use accelerated construction techniques to minimize service impacts. Rail service disruptions and road closures will be limited to weekends.

Service Shutdowns

We’ll need to shut down Fairmount Line service between Uphams Corner and Newmarket Station on weekends while we replace the steel superstructures.

Traffic Impacts

Work will be coordinated to be completed as quickly as possible. There will be 2 phases of detours, based on the work we’re doing:

  • Bridge support work will be done on weekdays, and vehicle traffic will be reduced to one lane.
  • Superstructure replacement will be done on weekends, overnight. East Cottage Street and Norfolk Ave will be closed, and traffic will be detoured.
