Fitchburg Line
Service Alerts For Fitchburg Line Close
  • Service Change
    Normal train service will operate on the Fitchburg Line this weekend, 5/26-27. All trains will run to/from North Station.

    On weekends, through June 17, Fitchburg Line service may be suspended in both directions between Porter Square and North Station due to work on the Green Line Extension. A free subway connection will be provided at Porter Sq and North Station during these weekend diversions.
    Passengers should allow approximately 30 minutes of travel time between North Station and Porter Square utilizing the subway. There will be no direct connection. Outbound trains will depart at their scheduled time from Porter Square.
    Inbound Fitchburg Line trains will terminate at Porter Square where passengers can connect with the Red Line for service to Boston. Passengers desiring outbound Fitchburg Line service from Boston must take the subway to Porter Square for a commuter rail connection.

  • Station Issue (Ongoing)
    Access to the east entrance of North Station is available through a covered walkway. Legends Way is closed to pedestrian access.

    Customers are advised that the pedestrian route for customers transferring from the Green and Orange Line exits at Causeway and Beverly St into North Station Commuter Rail will be moved slightly to accommodate ongoing construction work.
    After crossing Causeway St, pedestrians will use a protected walkway along the east side of Legends Way, directly abutting Portal Park. The walkway will include a barrier and kick-plate for blind and low vision passengers.
    As an alternative, customers may consider utilizing the west exit from North Station Commuter Rail due to congestion.

    Weekend train service from 5/26-6/17 will be replaced by free bus shuttles between Worcester and Framingham due to the installation of Positive Train Control (PTC)

    Note signage at Worcester, Grafton, Westborough, Southborough, Ashland and Framingham for bus boarding locations.

    Bus shuttles will operate on a schedule available at mbta.com/worcester. Note:
    The inbound train schedule is modified while the outbound train schedule is unchanged. Please allow additional travel time.
    During a second construction phase, 6/23-7/29, shuttle bus and connecting subway service will replace trains between Framingham and Boston. No train or shuttle service will be provided to/from Newtonville, West Newton, Auburndale, Boston Landing or Yawkey. Normal train service will operate between Worcester and Framingham.

    Weekend train service on the Franklin Line will be replaced by ADA accessible shuttle buses, making all regularly scheduled stops, between Forge Park/495 and Readville stations from April 7th through May 27th during the installation of PTC.

    The MBTA will install federally mandated Positive Train Control (PTC) systems along the Franklin Line to improve safety by reducing train collisions and derailments. This work will require weekend shutdowns on the line between Forge Park/495 and Readville, where passengers will connect to train service.
    Shuttle buses will be free and passengers will pay for train service from Readville to Boston.

    The pedestrian bridge at the Braintree Parking Garage will be closed through Summer 2020 due to construction.

    For access to Braintree Station during this closure, travel down to the first floor and use the pedestrian crosswalk to enter the station at the street level.
    This closure is due to the South Shore Parking Garages Improvements and Renovations Project. The pedestrian bridge will be replaced by a new garage lobby featuring elevators and stairwells.

    On weekends, May 12 - May 27, Lowell Line service in both directions will be replaced with a free bus shuttle connecting passengers to Wellington Station on the Orange Line.

    Inbound passengers will board a free bus shuttle that will make all stops on the Lowell Line except North Station. The bus will run to Wellington Station on the Orange Line for continued service into Boston. There will be no direct connection to North Station.
    Passengers will need to pay the subway fare at Wellington Station.
    Bus shuttles will depart Wellington at the time the train is regularly scheduled to depart North Station. Outbound passengers will need to allow additional travel time to Wellington Station to connect with the free bus shuttles.

    On Mondays, Tuesdays, & Wednesdays, from May - July, shuttle buses will replace service on four mid-day Stoughton trains while we test equipment for PTC.

    The following outbound trains will be replaced by a bus shuttle between Canton Jct. & Stoughton:
    - 909 (9:45 am from S. Station)
    - 911 (1:20 pm from S. Station), which will be held for approximately 10 minutes between Hyde Park & Route 128.

    The following inbound trains will be replaced by a bus shuttle:
    - 910 (10:40 am from Stoughton) will be bused between Stoughton & Route 128. The bus will then continue to Dedham Corp. Ctr. for inbound train service aboard Franklin Train 712 (11:31 from Dedham Corp / due at S. Station at 11:54 am).
    - 912 (2:15 pm from Stoughton) will be bused between Stoughton & Canton Jct. The bus shuttle will stop at Route 128 for drop-off only & then travel directly to South Station, without making a station stop at Back Bay, and will arrive around 3:30 pm.
