2022 Fare Changes

On March 24, 2022, the MBTA Board approved changes that will expand our products for reduced fare riders and simplify tariff rules.

Changes include:

Permanent 5-Day FlexPasses on Commuter Rail
Lower pricing for 1-Day LinkPasses
A new 7-Day LinkPass for reduced fare riders
Expanding Reduced Fare Monthly Passes to all modes
Second transfers on bus and subway and transfers between Express Buses

These changes will go into effect by July 1, 2022 unless stated otherwise.

Fare Transformation

Permanent 5-Day Flex Passes

The 5-Day FlexPass was first introduced on the mTicket app in 2020 as an option for riders whose work schedules and commuting patterns changed due to the pandemic. Riders can purchase a bundle of five 1-Day passes for a 10% discount as compared to standard round-trip fares.

This change makes the 5-Day FlexPass permanent and will go into effect immediately.

Lower 1-Day LinkPass price

To increase equity for low-income and minority riders who typically purchase 1-Day LinkPasses, we’re lowering the cost of this product from $12.75 to $11.

An $11 LinkPass will pay for itself after five subway rides within 24 hours.

New Reduced Fare 7-Day LinkPasses

Currently, one-way tickets and monthly LinkPasses are the only reduced fare options for reduced fare riders on subway and bus. Our changes include a new Reduced 7-Day LinkPass for $10, which breaks even after nine subway rides.

Monthly Passes for reduced fare riders

We’re expanding our Monthly Reduced Fare Passes to include:

Commuter Rail*
Express Bus
Ferry*
Reduced LinkPasses valid on Commuter Rail Zone 1A*
Reduced LinkPasses valid on Inner Harbor Ferry*

Eligible riders will be able to get these passes for about half the cost of full-fare prices.

*Commuter Rail and ferry travel requires a printed “flash pass” CharlieTicket that staff can visually validate. Currently, there is no option for visual validation with reduced fare cards. We’re working on a solution that will allow reduced fare riders to have a visually validated pass in addition to their Reduced Fare CharlieCard.

An additional transfer between subway and bus routes

Currently, riders can only transfer once between bus and/or subway with one exception—CharlieCard riders may transfer from bus to subway to bus. To simplify our transfer policy, we're allowing all combinations of second transfers involving buses and subway, and one transfer between Express Buses.
