You must purchase a ticket or pass for the ferry before you board. A crew member will check your ticket once you’re on board, but there’s no option to pay in cash on the boat.
CharlieTickets are reusable paper passes that can be loaded with single ride or monthly passes. Reduced fare CharlieTicket holders can also buy 10-ride tickets.
CharlieTicket holders with monthly ferry passes can transfer to some additional MBTA modes for free.

mTicket is an app that allows you to purchase single ride, 10-ride, or monthly passes from your smartphone.
mTicket monthly passes are $10 less than the CharlieTicket fare.
mTicket fare payments do not include transfers to other modes.

Single ride paper tickets for the ferry are issued by Boston Harbor Cruises, the MBTA's ferry operator, at ticket booths on the docks.

CharlieCards may be issued to customers who buy monthly ferry passes online or get their pass through their employer. It provides the same benefits as a pre-printed CharlieTicket.

Fare Vending Machines
Monthly ferry passes are available for purchase at fare vending machines, which are located at all subway stations and the Lynn and Worcester/Union commuter rail stations.
Most machines accept cash and major credit/debit cards. Some machines only accept credit/debit cards and are clearly marked to indicate they don’t accept cash.
