Phase 1 Service Changes

The Bus Network Redesign service changes are being implemented in phases, in line with our available resources. In December 2024, we’ll begin to implement bus service changes throughout the communities of Chelsea, Everett, Revere, Malden, Somerville, Cambridge, and East Boston. We are hiring more bus operators now to implement these changes.

Here’s an overview of the changes:

  • Change six bus routes, increasing service by 60% on the north side
  • Introduce Frequent Bus Routes by increasing service for four routes (Routes 104, 109, 110, and 116) to 15 minutes or less, all day, every day
  • New connections to the Red, Orange, Green, and Blue lines

Service Change Details

RouteDescription of Changes
Route109Description of ChangesIncrease frequency and service hours of Route 109 (Everett-Harvard) and extend the route west past Sullivan Station to Harvard Square, nearly tripling service along this route.
Route86Description of ChangesShorten Route 86 (Reservoir-Harvard) and end the route in Harvard Square. The new, more frequent Route 109 will replace Route 86 from Harvard Square to Sullivan Station. Route 86 will also have more service during mid-day, evenings, and weekends.
Route116,117Description of ChangesCombine Routes 116 and 117 into a Frequent Bus Route, the new Route 116 (Wonderland – Maverick).
Route110Description of ChangesIncrease the frequency and hours of Route 110 (Wellington – Wonderland), doubling the amount of service.
Route104Description of ChangesDouble service on Route 104 (Malden – Airport) and redirect it to Bellingham Square and Airport Station, creating a new, frequent connection from Malden and Everett to Chelsea and East Boston.

To support these service changes, we are pursuing new bus lanes, bus stops, and bus staging facilities along these routes.

Currently, we do not have specific route schedules or timetables related to these service changes. Route schedules and timetables will be available closer to December. Sign up for our newsletter or check back here for more details.
