Phase 2 of Tremont/Columbus Bus Lanes at 30% Design

In Summer 2023 we announced a concept design for Phase 2 of the Columbus Avenue Bus Lanes project. Since then, we have collected feedback and received strong community support for the project, including 90% of respondents replying that they generally support the proposed concept.
Feedback included:

- A virtual community briefing
- Open house pop-ups

Design Updates
The MBTA is coordinating closely with the City of Boston Transportation Department (BTD) and the Boston Planning and Development Authority (BPDA) to continue analysis and evaluation of proposed designs. This includes continuing to refine the design through more detailed analyses and engineering, as well as ongoing coordination with adjoining properties and developments. It also includes some specific coordination and design on the Southwest Corridor and Roxbury Crossing Plaza.
Southwest Corridor Park Action Plan
The project team is collaborating with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) on the ongoing Southwest Corridor Park Action Plan, which overlaps with our project’s area. The Southwest Corridor is the linear park that is adjacent to Columbus Ave and serves cyclists and pedestrians.
Collaboration with DCR will allow us to improve pedestrian crossings in the area. This would include raised crossings with better sight lines and increased space for cyclists and pedestrians to travel safely side-by-side.
Roxbury Crossing Plaza Design
With the City of Boston, DCR, and community input, we aim to improve the Roxbury Crossing Plaza for the surrounding community. Improvements would allow cyclists and pedestrians to pass through the area safely and efficiently. We are in the process of communicating with neighborhood stakeholders about this project.
Next Steps
Once the Phase 2 design is 75% complete, we will conduct another round of public meetings and community engagement. This portion of Phase 2 will include traffic analysis, green infrastructure concepts, and plaza and platform designs.
Phase 2 design is anticipated to be complete in fall 2024. In spring 2025, we will begin with early construction and full-scale construction will continue through 2026. Prior to construction, there will be continued community outreach.

As part of our $9.6 billion, 5-year capital investment plan, we're renovating stations, modernizing fare collection systems, upgrading services for our buses, subways, and ferries, and improving the accessibility of the entire system.
