The MBTA is pleased to provide you with this update of project activities completed in February and ongoing or upcoming work for March 2021.

East Abutment

The construction of the northeast retaining wall is complete. The east abutment was backfilled and compacted up to the level of the approach slabs. An approach slab spans the gap between the rigid abutment and the approach embankment. The slab reduces the load on the abutment along with reducing the potential for settlement of the tracks leading up to the bridge. The concrete approach slabs were formed, reinforced, and poured. After the approach slabs were cured, compacted fill was placed over them.

Control Tower

Progress has been made on the new control tower, which will operate the new bridge. Critical electrical and signal panel cabinets have been installed. System controls including power drive units and motor control center units have been installed inside the tower.

Pier 1

Pier 1 will be supported on two drilled shafts. The drilled shaft rig and barge are mobilizing and will soon begin installation of the drilled shafts. Steel casings and drilling equipment including augers have arrived on site.

Signals, Power, and Utilities

The installation of conduits towards the east of the bridge has continued along with the installation of new precast hand holes that provide access to the infrastructure. These conduits will support vital MBTA signal systems and provide additional capacity for future upgrades.  At the generator pad, new cabinets were installed to support the generator.
