Bus Operator Training Overview

After you've successfully completed the application process, you'll begin training for your new role.

If you already have a commercial driver's license (CDL), start at step three. If you do not have a CDL, start at step one.

1. Attend CDL Course

In preparation for the computer-based commercial learner's permit (CLP) exam, you will start your bus operator training with a paid, two-week CDL course. The course is taught by an MBTA instructor, Monday – Friday, 6 AM – 2PM.

2. Study for and Take the CLP Exam

The CLP exam, paid for by the MBTA, consists of three sections:

• 50 general questions (60 minutes)
• 25 questions on air brakes (25 minutes)
• 20 questions on passengers (20 minutes)

Test Preparation

We will provide you with a 180-page CDL manual to study. Expect to spend 10 – 30 hours studying on your own.

Prior to the exam, you must also attend at least one familiarization class. Classes are held every other Tuesday from 2:30 PM – 6:30 PM at 21 Arlington Ave, Charlestown, MA 02129, in building six on the second floor.

Taking the Exam

You will find out if you pass or fail the exam once you complete it. If you fail, you will be offered an extra week of training and can retake the test. If you pass, you will move on to the next eight weeks of bus operator training.

3. Train for Your Role

You will receive paid, hands-on training on the road under supervision for eight weeks.

If you have a CLP, you will take the CDL test during this time to receive your physical license. After passing the physical license test, you must go to the RMV and pay the $60 license fee to receive your license in the mail.

4. Begin Full-Time Role

Congratulations, you are now a full-time MBTA bus operator!
