As part of the MBTA’s $8 billion, 5-year capital investment program, the T is undertaking infrastructure projects this weekend across the Orange Line, Green Line, and Lowell Commuter Rail Line, which will require 4, separate diversions in service. There will be video/photography opportunities for media at all 4 sites on Saturday, August 24.

As previously advised, effective tonight at approximately 8:30 PM, weekend construction work will take place along the B and D branches of the Green Line. Weekend work will also take place all day Saturday and Sunday on part of the Orange Line. On the Commuter Rail network, the Lowell Line will be replaced with express shuttle buses between Anderson/Woburn and North Station to accommodate bridge construction required to extend the Green Line to Somerville and Medford.

“These infrastructure upgrade projects happening this weekend across the system are part of the MBTA’s ongoing work to improve safety, service delivery, and the overall customer experience,” said MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak.  “While we acknowledge that outages in normal service are inconvenient, they allow us to offer improved service sooner by expanding both the amount of work and the time we allow for work to take place.”

The following are video-/photography-only opportunities with unobstructed views of the various construction efforts from publicly accessible locations.

green line D D Green Line D Branch

Shuttle buses will replace D Branch service between Riverside and Reservoir to allow for signal cable installation to take place between Woodland, Waban, and Eliot Stations.

Lowell Line service will be replaced with express buses to transport customers between Anderson/Woburn and North Station beginning with the start of service on Saturday and lasting through the weekend. During the diversion, crews will be working to replace the bridge deck for the Washington Street Bridge in East Somerville as part of the Green Line Extension project

Following weekend work, all regularly scheduled MBTA services will resume with the start of service on Monday, August 26.

To facilitate an increase in capital investments across the MBTA, additional diversions in service will be scheduled throughout the summer and fall.
